Match Report

The last match under the Beech Trees

18th September 1994 v Great Houghton

Beech Tree 1997 after gales had brought many trees down.

The last ever game on the old Ecton pitch, unfortunately played without such stalwarts as Malc Kearsley, Brian Saunders and Dave Croft all of whom were too emotional to play and made excuses such as weddings, holiday etc.

Ecton won the toss and batted and with M.Bullock falling for 12 Steve Wheatman again sensing easy runs promoted himself up in the order. His senses proved correct as he knocked a second seccessive 60 (aided by some iffy fieldingand Jamie Perrin also seeming to posses some amazing sense of jug avoidance by being out in the 40s for the umpteenth time during the season. Chris (thin boy) Ellis making a welcome return to the team for the final fixture scored a rapid 29 and with Steve Loasby (21no) and Steve Richards 22 an excellent total of 231 was reached.

Houghtons reply was always in touch at 99-3 but being a rare 'time' game Ecton needed to bowl the opposition out to win. Skipper Steve Wheatman (now sensing easy wickets) came into the attack and grabbed 5-35 to send Houghton reeling to 150-9 before Mark Bullock succesfully extracted a run out of his to grab a suitable victory in the last game under the trees.

The end of what has been a most enjoyable era both on and off the field for 4 generations of Ecton Cricket.
